Why Join a Flower CSA in 2025

When we began writing about beauty in 2020, we wrote a short blog called, “Why Flowers?” describing why we started a flower farm.

We’ve been circling back to it and what the Greek philosopher Anaxagoras said when he was asked, “What is the purpose of life?” since we saw the aurora borealis in the night sky above our farm last week; it was an experience, like looking at Jupiter or Saturn through the telescope the first time, that we’ll never forget.

Well, about our old Athenian friend—Anaxagoras answered that the purpose of life is "to behold [to let one’s mind be held by] the Sun, the Moon, and the heavens." In other words, to experience and contemplate beauty.

This simple answer to life’s most pressing question inspired us to become flower farmers.

In a world that moves faster than Ferris Bueller could have imagined, feels lonely—where screens dominate our landscape, competition is cut-throat, and our mode of relating to each other can get reduced to something called ‘operating,’ stress and anxiety weigh heavily and distort our mindset.

But we believe an everyday encounter with beauty is the antidote, and there's a simple way to experience it: flowers.

Over and over we hear from our Flower Tribe that having fresh flowers in their homes is about more than simply decorating a space; it's about creating an atmosphere—and an opportunity to pause for a moment and be held by the simple yet profound beauty of flowers.

Beauty has a remarkable effect on our mindset and overall well-being.

Research shows—and we talked about it in another blog called, “The Power of Flowers,” that flowers reduce stress and anxiety.

In fact, the simple act of smelling or looking at flowers can lower cortisol levels, helping us feel more relaxed and at ease.

Flowers are shown to:

  1. Boost mood and well-being by stimulating the production of feel-good chemicals like dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin in our brains;

  2. Enhance creativity and focus—the experience of beauty can stimulate our minds, leading to increased creative thinking and problem-solving abilities;

  3. Strengthen relationships, because giving the experience of beauty to the people you love is a wonderful way to tell them, “I love you,” “I’m sorry,” “I’m happy for you,” or “You matter,” and even—”We’re getting married today!”

  4. Even the fading flower reminds us to slow down—to cherish now and to be present to others in this moment because time is the limiting factor of our lives.

We see and hear about all of this and more from the people who buy our flowers, especially our Flower CSA members. We call them our Flower Tribe—a group of like-minded people who value beauty, understand the power of flowers to transform our mindset, and who subscribe to a bouquet each week during our growing season.

Since we ripped up two acres of lawn to sow some hope 6 weeks into the pandemic, our little flower farm has flourished in ways we never imagined, but the growth of our Flower CSA from 7 members in 2021 to 50 members in 2024, as well as the return of members year-after-year—including many of our 2021 members for four years, is incredibly inspiring; it tells us, this really matters.

Our Signature 24-week Flower CSA has become a favorite among those who understand the power of having fresh flowers in their homes regularly.

Imagine coming home after a long day, perhaps feeling worn down by all of the grand challenges of modern life, and a pinch petty office drama to taste, but there’s vibrant bouquet of flowers on the kitchen table.

You pause to take in some of the beauty, think about the colors, the different forms of flowers—spikes, discs, flowers that are frilly or fragrant.

Suddenly, you’re not bringing all of that anxiety waiting to be triggered into your beautiful home.

Before you know it, you feel a mindset change and you’re looking forward to making the family dinner and eating it together, because, “Beauty is to enthuse us for work, and work is to raise us up.” This is one of the many gifts you give to yourself when you bring flowers into your home.

As we open up early bird registration (because we’re Two Sparrows Farm, after all) for our 2025 Flower CSA from now until December 24, we invite you to make a commitment to beauty for yourself and the people you love, and to the idea that every day life can and should be punctuated by encounters with beauty that inspire gratitude and well-being.

By signing up, you're not just securing a weekly bouquet from May through October, you're saying yes to a regular encounter with beauty—that this matters to your mindset, and so, taking time to stop and smell the roses (or whatever bloom happens to be in season) is essential to a well-lived life.

Join us in the regular encounter with beauty in 2025 when you subscribe to one of our Flower CSAs today. In 2025, we’re offering two new options for how to get your hands on beautiful, fresh-cut flowers: the Ithaca Farmers Market on Saturdays at Steamboat Landing, plus pick-up on West Point for our fast-growing “Black Knight Flower Tribe.” Click the button below to learn more about our subscriptions.
